We all know our skin is really important to us.
A recent report by the British Association of Dermatologists found that 90% of patients with a skin disease also suffer psychological problems which are related to their condition.
It is well known that there is a close association between the brain and our skin. For example a lack of confidence, depression or stress can lead to a worsening of any skin disorders. In turn such disorders can themselves lead to psychological problems.
The result is a vicious self-perpetuating cycle.
It is important that we recognise the significance of skin disorders to the sufferer. Being told ‘it’s only acne’ really doesn’t help. To the sufferer it is a major issue.
In addition there are secondary effects which can also be debilitating. Itching skin, for example, can lead to scratching which in turn may result in a disturbed night’s sleep.
Fortunately there are plenty of resources and treatments available for people with skin disorders. If you have such a problem, stay calm and take advantage of the professional help available.
