Dry Skin or Dehydrated? 5 Key Differences You Need to Know

“My skin feels dry” is one of the most common things I hear from clients and it’s often true. But sometimes what we think is dry skin is actually dehydrated skin, and treating them the same way doesn’t always work. In fact, doing so can make things worse.

So how do you tell the difference? Understanding whether your skin is dry or dehydrated is the first step to choosing the right products, getting the best results from treatments, and feeling comfortable in your skin.

Here are the five key differences I always share in salon to help you work it out.

1. Dry Skin Is a Skin Type — Dehydrated Skin Is a Condition

This is the most important distinction.

Dry skin is your natural skin type, just like oily or combination. If you have dry skin, it means your skin produces less sebum (natural oil) than it needs. You were likely born with it, and you may find it persists all year round.

Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is a temporary condition. It happens when your skin lacks water in the upper layers, and it can affect anyone — even people with oily or combination skin.

Why it matters: Treating dehydrated skin with rich, oil-heavy products might leave you feeling greasy and congested. Treating dry skin with lightweight hydration alone often doesn’t go far enough.

2. Dry Skin Feels Rough and Flaky — Dehydrated Skin Feels Tight and Dull

Think about how your skin feels when you touch it.

Dry skin often feels rough, flaky or uneven. You may see visible patches, especially around the cheeks, nose, and forehead. Your skin might also look ashy or greyish in certain lights, especially in winter.

Dehydrated skin feels more like an overall tightness, as if your skin is being pulled or stretched. It might look flat or dull, and fine lines (especially across the forehead or under eyes) may appear more noticeable — even if they’re just temporary.

Why it matters:
Flaky, dry skin needs moisturisers that are rich in lipids and emollients to soften and smooth the texture. Tight, dehydrated skin needs hydration especially humectants like hyaluronic acid that draw water into the skin.

3. Dry Skin Needs Oils — Dehydrated Skin Needs Water

This is where a lot of people get tripped up.

Dry skin lacks oil. It needs replenishing with nourishing oils and barrier-repairing ingredients like ceramides, squalane or shea butter.

Dehydrated skin lacks water. It benefits more from lightweight hydration, think water-based serums and moisturisers with ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid.

Why it matters:
Using only water-based products on dry skin won’t give it the comfort or softness it needs. Using heavy oils on dehydrated skin might clog pores or worsen breakouts, especially if your skin is oily underneath.

4. Dry Skin Is Ongoing — Dehydration Comes and Goes

Dry skin is fairly consistent. If it’s your skin type, you’ll notice the same issues throughout the year, no matter your lifestyle. It’s more common as we age, and in people with conditions like eczema or psoriasis.

Dehydrated skin is more reactive. You might notice flare-ups during cold weather, after travelling, when using strong products, or if your diet or stress levels change.

Why it matters:
If your skin only feels uncomfortable sometimes, it’s likely dehydration. If it always feels dry no matter what you use, you probably have a dry skin type that needs more tailored support.

5. They Need Different Products – and Dermalogica Has the Right Ones

Because dry and dehydrated skin need different support, I always recommend products based on your skin’s specific needs. Here are some of my go-to Dermalogica favourites:
