We are all familiar with getting ourselves ‘Summer Ready’, wax, tan, SPF, but is your skin Winter Ready?

It won’t be all that long and autumn will fall behind us and winter will be at our front doors. Dark mornings, cold nights and frost on the cars. This cold and icy season can wreak havoc on our skin so it’s important to be prepared to protect against those harsh winter elements.

Adapt your skincare routine.

The skincare routine you’ve been following for the last 6 months just won’t cut it in the winter, your skin will likely need far more moisture to avoid tightness and dry spots. This dryness is caused by the lack of humidity in the winter months and can be treated by switching to a cream-based moisturiser and adding in a hydration mist before and after applying your makeup.

Keep those showers short.

With the weather outside getting colder it can be all too tempting to spend long periods of time under the hot water of your daily shower, but this is not good for your skin! Hot showers saps skin of it’s natural oils which can lead to dry, irritated skin as the skin barrier is broken down and moisture is escaping. Tackle this by turning down the heat, limit time spent in the shower and be sure to moisturise your whole body afterwards and pat dry.

What products should you make sure are in your daily winter routine?

  • SPF
You may think that with less sunshine this time of year that you wouldn’t need SPF, but that isn’t true. UV rays are still present and can cause irreparable damage to your skin
  • Lip Balm and scrub
Introducing a lip scrub can help get rid of those dry, flaky bits of skin on and around your lips. Apply lip balm in the morning and before you go to bed to ensure they are completely moisturised.
  • Exfoliator
As your skin gets drier it causes a build-up of dead skin cells that can dull your skin and clog follicles. Exfoliating regularly- about 1-3 times per week, helps reduce congestion and minimise breakouts.

Schedule a facial.

Winter is often the ideal time to book in for a facial as there is less sun exposure during the day and with the festive season coming up, why not ask friends or relatives for a gift voucher to treat yourself and your skin to a bit of TLC?
