Skin Preparation For Summer

With summer just around the corner, it’s that all important time to make sure your skin feels healthy and vitalised when the sun is out in full force. Dried out, dehydrated skin is the last thing we want when summer rolls around. At this time of year, it can make all the difference to keep your skin clear and hydrated, so here’s our guide to skin preparation for this summer!

Exfoliation

Exfoliation presents possibly the most essential way to treat your skin this summer since it removes dead build up and skin cells to uncover the brighter, healthier layers of skin underneath. During summer, environmental pollutants and sweat can clog up skin pores and cause oily build up on the skin. Exfoliation is a great way to combat this and is absolutely essential for the longevity of the skin, particularly during the hot summer months. Medical professionals recommend getting the skin chemically exfoliated, before having people continue their own exfoliating regime at home. Gently scrubbing the face at least once a week can help get rid of flaky, dead skin to prevent dull appearance and blemishes.

Moisturising

When you think about the way that the sun dries out the skin in summer, it makes sense that moisturising should be a priority for the season. Moisture levels in the skin can be massively reduced by this environment, so it couldn’t be a better time to get moisturising! We recommend a water-based, lighter formula that won’t leave you susceptible to greasy skin and clogged pores. Utilising serums with hyaluronic acid also provide an excellent way for the skin to get more moisture without needing to lay it on heavy.

Protection

Extremely important for any skincare routine in summer is protecting the skin from UV radiation caused by the sun. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is going to be crucial to apply every morning if, like most of us, you are going to be spending a lot of time in the sun this summer. This will also keep your skin feeling reinvigorated and glowing during the summer months, staving off the wrinkles, sunburn and weathering that can come from long exposure in the sun.

Face mask

Face masks can be particularly important in summer because they add a highly potent dose of moisture and hydration to dehydrated or dry skin. Water within the mask infiltrates deep into the epidermis to enhance elasticity and soften the skin. Also worth noting is that when the skin is moisturised and well hydrated, it becomes much easier to properly apply makeup. Your skin will also display a more youthful, plump appearance.

Drinking water

During the summer, we can be sweating a lot, causing us to lose water and become dehydrated as the body tries to keep us cool. We now know that drinking at least a few pints of water daily can improve the elasticity of the skin, cleansing it and unclogging any pores that might have dead and dirty skin cells clogging them up. Drinking water also helps the skin to retain moisture and overall skin health, so next time you think about skimping on the water bottle, think again! Be sure to not overdo it, however, as excessive hydration has been shown to have no additional benefit; just make sure you’re drinking enough to feel perfectly hydrated.
