The 5 Main Skin Types Explained – Plus How to Care for Yours!

If you’ve ever wondered why a product works wonders for someone else but leaves your skin irritated, oily, or no different at all, you’re not alone. One of the most common things I help clients with in the salon is understanding their skin type. It really is the foundation of any good skincare routine.

Knowing your skin type isn’t just helpful. It’s essential. Whether you’re choosing a cleanser, moisturiser, or booking a treatment, everything starts with understanding what your skin needs. So in this blog, I’ll walk you through how to work out your skin type and explain why it matters more than you might think.

Why Your Skin Type Is So Important

Your skin type determines how your skin behaves. It influences how your skin reacts to changes in the weather, different products, hormones, stress, and more. When you use the wrong products for your skin type, it can lead to breakouts, dryness, sensitivity, or just feeling like nothing’s really working. But once you know your skin and start using the right products and treatments, that’s when you start seeing real results such as smoother texture, better hydration, more glow, and fewer problems.

The Five Main Skin Types

Here’s a simple breakdown of the five main skin types. Take a look and see which one sounds most like you.

Normal Skin

Normal skin doesn’t mean flawless. It just means your skin is well-balanced. It’s not too oily, not too dry, and generally behaves itself.

You might have normal skin if:
– Your pores aren’t very visible
– Your skin texture is fairly smooth
– You don’t often feel dry or greasy
– You get the odd blemish but nothing regular

My tip: Even if your skin is low-maintenance, it still needs support. I recommend using gentle, hydrating products and protecting your skin daily with SPF.

Dry Skin

Dry skin can feel tight, rough, or even flaky. It lacks natural oils, which are essential for keeping your skin soft and protected.

You might have dry skin if:
– Your skin feels tight after washing
– You notice flaking or dry patches
– Your skin can look dull
– Fine lines appear more visible

My tip: Hydration is everything here. I recommend nourishing products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and oils. Avoid foaming cleansers and be gentle with exfoliation.

Oily Skin

Oily skin produces more sebum, which can lead to shine, clogged pores, and breakouts.

You might have oily skin if:
– Your skin feels greasy, especially by mid-day
– You often get blackheads or blemishes
– Your pores look larger
– Makeup doesn’t stay put

My tip: A lot of people with oily skin skip moisturiser, but your skin still needs hydration. Go for lightweight, oil-free products and consider regular facials to help keep things under control.

Combination Skin

Combination skin means you’ve got a mix of different skin types, usually an oily T-zone and normal or dry cheeks.

You might have combination skin if:
– You’re shiny in some areas and dry in others
– You get breakouts in your T-zone but not elsewhere
– Your skin can feel unpredictable

My tip: This one’s all about balance. You might need to use different products on different areas of your face. For example, a mattifying product on the T-zone and something richer on the cheeks.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin reacts easily. It might sting, feel itchy, or go red with certain products or weather changes.

You might have sensitive skin if:
– You experience redness, flushing or stinging
– You’re prone to rashes or dry, reactive patches
– Your skin feels uncomfortable with some products or treatments

My tip: Less is more. Look for calming, fragrance-free skincare and always patch test new products. I often recommend soothing ingredients like oat, niacinamide, and aloe vera.

A Quick Test You Can Try at Home

Here’s a simple way to get a feel for your skin type. Cleanse your face as normal, then leave your skin bare with no products for about an hour. After that, observe how it feels and looks. If it feels tight or flaky, your skin is probably dry. If it looks shiny all over, it is likely oily. If only your forehead, nose, and chin are shiny, you may have combination skin. If your skin feels calm and balanced, it is likely normal. If it appears red or irritated, it may be sensitive.

Still not sure? Don’t worry. That’s where I come in.
